During the primaries, the dream of the Bernie Sanders fanatic was this: free stuff for everyone. Oregon is now following that example, and you won’t believe what they started with.
Mind you, your first couple of guesses are probably something noble, even though also impossible. Free education? No, although that would be awesome if it could be done. Free health care? Obamacare’s not free – not by a long shot.
Free abortions? For everyone?
Sure, let’s start with that.

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown has signed a bill into law that requires all state insurers to provide free abortions to all – including illegal immigrants.
(For the record, I did warn you. I said ‘for everyone.’)
And while we’re on that, another word of warning – this is going to be expensive.
Enacting the law – the first of its kind in the nation – will cost the state $10.2 million, with $500,000 going toward abortions for some 22,900 women eligible for Medicaid in Oregon.
And a third word of warning – this law actually has a way to bypass religious objections.
Oregon insurers must provide 100 percent coverage for abortions without co-pays or deductibles. Those Medicaid beneficiaries who are covered by the state’s single nonprofit Catholic health insurance provider will still have their abortion costs reimbursed by the state.
In short:
1) Abortions are free for all, including illegal immigrants;
2) It’s going to be expensive; and
3) Taxpayers will still pay for the abortions of anyone using a faith-based insurance company.

You might think that conservatives are up in arms over this latest development. And the truth is…sort of.
Rep. Bill Post, however, said on Facebook, “The saddest day of my life was when I had to vote on this bill, though of course I voted NO, there was no reason to actually run this bill at all. Oregon should be ashamed and embarrassed.”
A vote for NO is admirable, of course…but I can’t help feeling that the Pro-Life movement was completely outmaneuvered here. If the best you can do to fight a bill is to simply vote, knowing that your vote will be ineffectual, well…it’s time for a new game plan.
And I’d hurry. Because Oregon is giving away free abortions.
